A Beginner’s Guide

What is Long Hair FUE? A simple starting point.

Long Hair FUE is a form of follicular unit excision (FUE) hair transplant in which the visible hair is not shaved. Selected follicles are moved from the donor area to areas of thinning, while the surrounding hair stays at its existing length. This guide explains what is long hair FUE in plain terms — what it is, who it may suit and what the process looks like — for anyone at the start of their research. For the full technical explanation, see our Long Hair FUE page.

The Basics

Four ideas to understand first.

Before comparing clinics or techniques, it helps to understand a few basic terms. None of them require a medical background.

01

FUE is the foundation

Follicular unit excision moves small natural groupings of hair, called follicular units, one at a time from the donor area to the area of thinning.

02

Long Hair FUE keeps the length

In Long Hair FUE, the visible hair is not trimmed or shaved, in either the donor or the recipient area. The surrounding hair stays as it is.

03

A refinement, not a new procedure

Long Hair FUE is a clinical refinement of FUE — not a different procedure, and not a guarantee of a different outcome.

04

The biology stays the same

Transplanted hair follows the same growth cycle as in any hair restoration. What changes is how the process looks from the outside.

Different Between standard FUE and Long Hair FUE

How It Differs

What changes when the hair is not shaved.

01

The donor area stays at full length

In standard FUE the donor area is shaved to short stubble. In Long Hair FUE it is kept at the patient’s existing length throughout.

02

The hairline can be seen on the day

Because transplanted hairs keep their length, the planned shape and direction can be seen immediately. This is known as the Day 0 preview.

03

Healing sits within existing hair

Small graft sites are largely concealed by the surrounding hair, which many patients find easier for work and daily life.

04

The work is slower and more precise

Working between full-length hairs is more demanding, so the technique trades operative speed for visual continuity and design control.

The Process

How the iGraft Long Hair FUE process works.

Every stage is doctor-led by Datuk Dr. Inder at Klinik Dr Inder, Petaling Jaya. In outline, the process follows five steps.

01

Private assessment

A confidential first conversation about your concerns, expectations and timing. Photographs can be shared remotely.

02

Consultation

Datuk Dr. Inder reviews your donor area, pattern of loss and facial structure, and draws the hairline directly with you.

03

Planning

The plan is shaped around your donor reserve, the area to be treated and your calendar. Suitability is confirmed before anything is scheduled.

04

Treatment day

A single, doctor-led day at Klinik Dr Inder, Petaling Jaya, performed within preserved hair.

05

Aftercare and review

Aftercare is guided personally by Datuk Dr. Inder, with follow-up through to the twelve-month review.

Recovery Timeline

What recovery usually looks like.

Long Hair FUE follows the same biological timeline as any hair transplant. Healing varies between individuals, and your own timeline is discussed in consultation.

01

Day 0

The procedure ends within preserved hair. Most patients leave looking much as they arrived, with the planned hairline already visible.

02

Days 3–7

Gentle aftercare and careful washing. Most routines resume within a few days, with sensible precautions.

03

Months 3–6

Temporary shedding of the transplanted hair shafts in the early weeks is normal. New growth is generally visible from month three.

04

Month 12

Density continues to build through months six to nine, and the full character of the result usually settles across roughly twelve months.

Who It May Suit

Not everyone with hair loss is a candidate, and suitability can only be confirmed in a consultation. Long Hair FUE may suit people who:

01

Cannot take visible time out

Professionals and others whose work or private life makes a shaved, post-procedure look difficult.

02

Have a stable donor area

Healthy density at the back and sides of the scalp, assessed personally for length and calibre.

03

Have a defined area of loss

A hairline, temples, crown or other zone where the surrounding hair can help conceal healing.

04

Hold realistic expectations

People looking for natural, believable improvement rather than a dramatic or instant change.

Results

Natural results take time.

Final density depends on donor quality, graft yield, the area treated and the plan agreed in consultation — not on the technique alone. Results are reviewed individually and discussed in the context of your own hair.

Frequently Asked

Beginner questions, answered simply.

The questions most often asked by people new to Long Hair FUE. For deeper technical detail, see the full Long Hair FUE guide.

01

It is an FUE hair transplant performed without shaving the visible hair, so the surrounding hair stays at its existing length throughout.

02

It shares the same surgical foundation. The difference is that the hair is not shaved, which changes how the procedure looks during recovery and makes the work more technically demanding.

03

Where Long Hair FUE is the appropriate approach, the donor and recipient areas are kept at their existing length. Your consultation confirms whether this suits your hair.

04

The planned hairline shape can be seen on the day — the Day 0 preview. Most transplanted hair shafts then shed temporarily, new growth is generally visible from month three, and the result settles across roughly twelve months.

05

No. Suitability depends on your donor area, pattern of loss, hair characteristics and medical history. When surgery is not the right step, that is the recommendation.
